Watch a sneak peek of some of the fun our FLL Explore students will be having this year with the UNEARTHED theme!
About FLL Explore
FIRST LEGO League Explore is a hands-on program designed to inspire, excite, and introduce kids in grades 2-3 to the wonders of science, technology, and engineering in teams of up to six children. This program features a real-world challenge explored through research, critical thinking, and imagination. Guided by adult coaches and the FIRST Core Values, team members work with LEGO elements and motorized parts to build ideas and concepts and present them for review. FIRST LEGO League Explore:
Teaches the benefits of teamwork
Sparks initial interest in science and technology
Introduces basic design skills through a hands-on approach with the familiarity and fun of LEGO building; and
Provides a culture of sharing and learning from others.
The culmination of the hard work for many teams is the participation in a FIRST LEGO League Explore event. Volunteer Reviewers at the event interview teams to learn about their LEGO Model and Show Me poster. All the teams are celebrated and leave with an award.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - PLEASE READ
When do you meet?
Our FLL Explore teams meet on the 2nd & 4th Fridays of the month from 6:00-7:30 pm. The first meeting of the season is the 4th Friday of August, and the last meeting is the 4th Friday of April. The teams will attend a festival in April 2027, and we will end the season with a big celebration on Sunday May 8, 2027 3:00-5:00 pm .
Where do you meet?
All FLL Explore meetings are held in Maglaras Hall at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church at 1700 10th Avenue in Broomfield, Colorado. Holy Comforter is our generous host, but our team is not religiously oriented, and people of all or no faith backgrounds are welcome.
How much does it cost to participate?
The cost per student is $360/year, due June1st and December 1st. We never want cost to be a barrier to participation so we have implemented a tiered fee structure for student fees. Learn more here.
Student Fees help cover part of the cost of team and festival registrations, robots and materials. The rest of the cost is paid for through individual donations, grants, and corporate sponsorships. Any help parents can provide with finding these additional sources of funding is most appreciated!
Who should join FLL Explore?
Anyone in grades 2 or 3! We believe ALL young students can thrive in STEM, and we strongly encourage girls, students of color, students who are neuro-diverse, and students who are still learning English to join our teams as well. All are welcome, and no previous robotics or coding experience is necessary.
What are the attendance expectations for students?
We believe that consistency is an important part of building strong team relationships, so we expect our team members to attend regularly and participate fully. While we are flexible in attendance so that our members can prioritize their health, education and family, we ask that if your student and family cannot commit to attending at least 75% of the meetings for the full year, you discuss this with us prior to joining.
Does my student have to participate in both semesters?
Yes. FLL Explore students work all year on their skills and team project, and the teams present their work at a festival in April. The success of the students and their teams is dependent on every member participating for a full year.
Is transportation provided to meetings, field trips or festivals?
No. Transportation of FLL students is the responsibility of the families so transportation is not provided. If this presents a challenge for you, please contact us to see if arrangements can be made with another family.
When and how do I join?
FLL Explore students are encouraged to start FLL Explore in the fall of their 2nd or 3rd grade year. We currently have a waitlist for FLL Explore, and 1st grade students currently enrolled with us have top priority for spots next year. If additional spots become available, students will be selected off the wait list based on the grade and gender balances of the teams, if other siblings are enrolled with Broomfield STEM, if parents are Mentors for Broomfield STEM, and the length of time a student has been on the wait list.
Please note: If your student is not already enrolled with Broomfield STEM and wants to participate during the 2026-2027 season, please add them the wait list now. If your student wants to participate in FLL Explore in the future, they will need to be enrolled in Discover Bots as a kindergarten or first grader for the 2026-2027 program year. Only students enrolled in Discover Bots, FLL Explore or FLL Challenge for 2026-2027 will be guaranteed a spot one one of our robotics teams for 2027-2028. All other students will need to be selected off the waitlist if space becomes available.
Can parents be mentors?
Yes! We are currently recruiting more mentors, and we parents are welcome to volunteer if they can do so on a consistent basis. We ask all mentors, including parent mentors, to commit to attending all meetings, go through our application and screening process, and complete our trainings. Please refer to the mentor page for more information.
